How to easily customize bed sheets

Can you believe we spend sleeping one third of our life? So It’s totally worth it to have a cozy bedroom and a comfortable bed. To have a quality sleep the mattress, the pillows and the duvet you choose are obviously important. Do not neglect the quality of the linen either. The design and the color will obviously influence your choice, but you must also take into account the climate, the temperature of your house and the kind of fabric texture you like. I partnered with California Design Den to dress up my bed and make my bedroom more comfortable. And as you know me, I obviously added a personal touch by customizing the linen.

I like cotton bed sheets and it was basically the only requirement I had in the past to choose linen. I always picked white ones…because you know they match everything and didn’t pay any attention at quality! Well, it’s clear that I was wrong. As soon at I opened the sheets I received by California Design Den I could feel the softness of the texture, it’s indeed a 400 thread counts. I give you a quick explanation: The quality of a fabric is measured in number of threads per square inch ( knowing that a good quality exceeds 200 threads per square inch, 400 being a very good quality). the higher is the thread count the softer and durable is the fabric.

* * *

I also like the small detail of adding a envelope with two cards, one with the washing care and the other with the bed sheet crafting story. It’s nice and shows the interest of the brand to take care of the details. As you can see I picked a smoked pearl color…which was a big change for me, who was used to white linen. Before using them I washed , dried and even iron the sheets, they came out as new and didn’t shrink at all. It was the first time of my life I ever iron bed sheets but I wanted a nice bed dressing so it was worth it.

* * *

You know I like to personalize stuffs, so I give these sheets a little twist by sewing some trims on the edge. Depending of your bed sheet color, you can choose to work with coordinated trims as I did or go for a more contrasted effect. Each trim must be 2 inches longer than your bed sheet width. You can add as many trim as you like: I choose a beige pompom trim, and two upholstery trims.

* * *

Pin the trims with the fabric, be careful to place them parallel from the bed sheet edge and at the same distance of each other. Sew them using zigzag points and a matching color thread. As my trim have a lot of texture you can’t see the zigzag stitches. If you work with plain trim or ribbon it will look better to make straight stitches as close as possible of the trim edge.

* * *

To have nice finished edges, fold the trim edge under itself and add a few extra stitches to hold the ends together. And done, you are ready to dress up your bed with your freshly customized sheets.

* * *

It was a fun and easy customization to make! It only took me 30 minutes and it’s a king size bed. It’s a cool option if you want to personalize linen and add a splash of color in the bedroom. Right know I’m thinking of a rainbow trim edge for a kid’s bedroom…Do you have any other idea in mind?

* * *

Thanks again to California Design Den for this collaboration!

Pin it for later!

    A high thread count is the number one thing for quality sheets. Besides that, I want to feel a substantial weight fabric, all cotton, with a finish that comes out of the dryer smooth and few wrinkles! I like pretty colors and sometimes tiny patters that go with my bedroom design scheme.

    Probably the most important element is the fabric content and its funtionability. Does it feel soft and comfortable, Does it help your body in hot or cold situations; can it adapt to be functional in odd temperatures and Does it feel like it invites your body onto the sheet.
    Another important element is the ability to wash and clean it with ease. This is important also.
