I wanted an extra side table on the living room because we only have one center coffee table. It’s practical to have and extra place to drop your glass or snacks. A small side table is easy move around where ever you need it.
The table top is made using a leftover tile from our bathroom. I went in the hardware store to buy the dowels and the brackets…and it only cost me 7 dollars! That means the new DIY Side table is very budget friendly!
Supplies to make a Tile Table
Before you begin, you need to choose the tiles you want to use to make the table top. Choose a medium size format.
Some of the standard dimensions that you can easily find in stores and which will be suitable for your project are 30x30cm , 45x45cm, 50x30cm tiles. Avoid working with tiles that are too large because they are heavier.
You can probably find tiles to give away on construction sites or to sell at low prices in outlet stores.
The advantage of making a table with a tiled top is that maintenance is very easy, a wipe and it’s clean, the table top is very resistant, it won’t stain with water or grease.
Here are the other materials you will need to build your DIY tile table:
- 4 metallic brackets
- Square wooden dowels
- A tile
- Silicone glue (or this one)
- Wood glue
- Headless nails
- Wood stain
- Varnish
- Hammer
- Trigger clamps
In the tutorial I explain how to build the structure of the DIY side table and how to place the tiles on it.
Let’s Start Building the Side Table
Cut 4 pieces to make a square shape whose dimensions are the same as the tile you gonna use for the top.
Screw the 4 dowels together with the brackets, leaving the corner gap.
Cut 4 dowels pieces to make the table feet, 40 cm (16 inches) is a regular high for a coffee table but you can adapt the dimension to your need.
Put a dowel at each corner of the square, nail and glue them together.
Cut 3 extra pieces to rigidify the structure, nail and glue 2 between the feet. Fix the last one transversely.
Once the wooden structure is done sand it, stain it, and varnish it. You can also choose to paint it….Just give it the finish you like and that fit in your room.
Last step, fix the tile on the structure. Put some silicone glue on the top, place the tile and pressure them together with trigger clamps to have a good adherence.
Wait until the silicone is completely dry and remove the pressure clamps.
Your new DIY Tile Side Table is ready to use! I hope you will enjoy it!
