How to sew a double sided blanket with pom poms

When the winter chill sets in, nothing beats curling up under a heavy, extra-warm blanket.

A while ago I made a huge blanket for our king size bed, this year I just finished a pompom throw for my daughter’s bed.

I like big heavy blankets that keep you warm during winter nights, so I used two fabrics: a mustard fleece and a patterned viscose/cotton/wool fabric.

Let me tell you that the combination of these two fabrics makes this blanket soooo warm. As I wanted to add a little fun, I have sewn some pom poms on the throw.

I did not want to risk that the pompoms come apart during washing, so I made them with the fleece fabric, and they turn out great! Find out how I sew them below.

How do you make a double sided-blanket with pom poms

Supplies you will need to make this warm throw:

• Fleece fabric ( 2 meters – 2 yards)
• Wool mix fabric ( 2 meters – 2 yards)
• Matching thread
• Matching embroidery floss
• Pins
• Scissors
• Sewing machine

You can buy a little more of fleece fabric if you plan to make pom poms with it.

I bought 2 meters of each fabric, I had to cut the fleece width down as it was a few centimeters wider than the patterned fabric.

Place your fabric on a flat surface (or on the floor…because it’s quite big), right side facing each other and pin the edges together.

Sew all along the edges leaving an unsewn gap of more or less 30 cm (12 inches).

The size of the gap just needs to be big enough for you to turn both fabric right side out.

Once you finish sewing the edges together, trim the corner tips and turn the fabric right side out.

Close the gap folding the fabrics inside and pin the edges together.

Then make a few invisible hand stitches to close the seam.

Make an extra seam all around your blanket at about 4 cm (1 1/2 in.) from the edge.

This over-seam will make your blanket stay flat and provide a nice finish.

That’s it for the blanket sewing part.

You can leave it like this, but adding a few pom poms make anything prettier! Don’t you agree?

I didn’t want to make pompoms using yarn, I was worried they will not stay together when washing the blanket.

So instead I used the plush side of the fleece fabric to make them. You can use a glass to draw and cut circles from the fabric.

Make stitches all around the circle edge then pull the thread and make a double knot…and voila! you just made a fleece pompom.

I added a few extra hand stitches to close the pompom and be sure the fabric will stay stitched together.

You need to calculate how many pompoms you will need and how you want to display them on the blanket. My blanket is 2m x 1.7m (7×6 yd) and I made 35 pompoms which I distributed in 7 rows of 5.

To know where to sew the pompoms I put the blanket flat and helping myself with a ruler, mark the emplacement of each pompom on the blanket back.

I used embroidery thread to stitch the pompoms on the blanket. I made a knot with the threads and cut all of them at the same length to make a sort of mini tassel on the back of each pompom emplacement.

And tadam! So tell me what do you think of this pompoms blanket? I love pom poms and if I listened to myself I would add them everywhere.
