This DIY project is a creative way to transform any pillow you have into a cheerful Christmas cushion using just ribbon.
The wonderful aspect of this idea is that once the holiday season concludes, you can easily remove the decorations. Just store the ribbon bow away to use next year, allowing you to use the pillow all year long.
Gather your Materials
The most exciting aspect of this DIY idea is that you personalize a pillow you already have, which means you’ll require minimal supplies to get started.
- Any Throw Pillow you already have
- Large ribbon
- Matching thread
- Needle
- Scissors
The concept here is to personalize a pillow you already own, which helps you avoid accumulating more items to store after the holiday season.
However, if you’re in the market for a new pillow, this option is definitely worth considering.
To create this craft, you’ll need a large ribbon, ideally around 5 centimeters (2 inches) wide.
For a standard throw pillow measuring 40 cm by 40 cm, you will need approximately 5 meters (5 yards) of ribbon.
I like to use velvet ribbon because it adds a lovely, cozy feel to the pillow. I chose a classic red ribbon, as it perfectly complements Christmas decorations and pairs beautifully with the color of the pillows I want to work with.
Of course, feel free to select any ribbon color that matches your pillow and aligns with your holiday decor theme.
How to DIY Christmas Pillows
Let’s start crafting! Transform your pillow into a charming gift with a cute bow to add a personal touch to your holiday decor.
Choose any pillow you like to decorate for Christmas. I opted for a 40×40 cm pillow, but this DIY project can be adapted to any square or rectangular throw pillow size.
1.Start by taking a ribbon and wrapping it around the pillow with the wrong side facing out. Cut the ribbon, leaving a 1 cm (1/2 in.) seam allowance at both ends, then pin the ends together and secure them with a few hand stitches.
2. Next, take another piece of ribbon and wrap it around the pillow in the opposite direction to achieve a gift-wrapping look. Again, cut the ribbon with a seam allowance and sew the ends together.
3. Turn both ribbons right side out and align the seams on top of each other. Make a few stitches where the ribbons cross to keep them in place, ensuring you only stitch the ribbons together. You can insert a piece of cardboard between the ribbon layers and the pillow to prevent stitching into the pillow itself.
4. Now, let’s create the bow. Position the ribbon on the pillow to determine the bow size; mine measures about 23 cm (9 in) in length. Wrap the ribbon around the first length three times, ensuring three layers on each fold, and cut any excess beyond the center.
5. Use a ruler to mark the center of the bow, then take your needle and thread to sew the layers together at the center. Pull the thread to form the bow shape, wrapping it around a few times if necessary, and finish with a knot to secure it.
6. Pull out the ribbon layers to achieve a nice bow shape.
7. Cut a small piece of ribbon to cover the bow’s center and sew it in place with a few stitches on the back.
8. Finally, position the bow at the center of the pillow, align it with the ribbons, and sew it down. Again, you can place cardboard between the ribbon and the pillow while making two seams next to the bow center to secure it.
And there you have it, a lovely Christmas pillow!
The best part is that once the holiday season is over, you can easily remove the bow and store it away for next year. It saves some storage space and you can enjoy the unadorned throw pillow all year long.

The best part about this idea is that when the holiday season wraps up, you can simply take off the bow and tuck it away for next year, keeping your pillow looking fresh and versatile.
Customizing your DIY Christmas pillows with a simple bow adds a festive touch to your home, making it the perfect setting to relax with a hot chocolate while enjoying a holiday movie or a good book.
Embrace the joy of the season by creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
