Sewing a weaving pillow cover

weaving pillow cover

I’ve been working on this pattern for weeks. I think throw pillows can make a great impact in our home decor. Of course, we can always use some nice fabric to sew a simple square cushion cover, but I wanted to add some texture and originality to my pillows.  I mean we can spend quite some time sewing a nice outfit, so the house deserves the same level of attention!

This pillow cover is inspired by traditional cane weaving work. Caning is the craft of applying rattan cane or rattan peel to a piece of furniture such as the backs or seats of chairs. This pillow cover is a modern way to use a traditional craft technique. It’s also an interesting manner to combine plain fabric, the contrast between the background and the straps enhance the weaving work.

This digital sewing pattern is available on my shop, it includes the actual pattern pieces for cutting out after printed and a full photo tutorial that shows you how to sew this pattern together. You can print the tutorial and assemble it to create a handy sewing notebook. It also includes a printable envelope to keep the pattern and notebook for future use.

The detailed instructions allow everyone, even beginner, to be able to sew this cushion cover. You will need basic sewing items like thread, pins, scissors or fabric strip cutter and your sewing machine of course. The finished pillow cover is 18×18 inches (45×45 cm) which is a standard dimension for pillow insert. The weaving work is clearly explained in the step by step tutorial.

I have to admit that with three kids the works don’t always go as fast as I wish but I’m proud to have finished this sewing pattern. Once you have all the materials, you can easily complete this sewing project in one afternoon, even faster if you are seamstress with little experience.

I think pillow goes better in pair so I’m thinking of sewing a second one. I don’t know if using the same fabric or go for something a little bit bold…like mustard yellow. What do you think? In which color would you like to sew this pillow cover?

If you want to have a look at some other of my sewing tutorials, I invite you to visit my Sewing gallery. You will find plenty of sewing ideas with free step by step instructions, it’s a great way to start sewing.
