How to organize the house with storage boxes and baskets?

Let’s talk about home organization today. I love boxes and baskets, they are a great way to store items, plus they can be a nice decor addition to any room. Having pretty storage bins around doesn’t always mean having a well-organized house.

I hate wasting time searching for lost items (most often belonging to the kids or my dear hubby). So I will share some tips to sorted boxes and bins and always know where everything is, and hopefully, it will help your family member knowing were them belonging are too!

5 practical boxes and baskets you can shop under 10 dollars

Organize objects by room

Store the objects in the room you will use them the most. I know that sometimes we use an item across several rooms, in this case just pic the room that makes more sense to you. I give you some example, make a box with all the wire cables, and put it next to the outlet you use the most to charge your phone, store your throw blankets in a basket next to the couch or place a bin in the entryway to collect caps and hats.

It’s much easier to find what you are looking for if it’s stored very close to where you will use it. And it will probably be easier to put it back in place once you do not need it anymore, no one will cross the house to return something.

Sort the bins by themes

It is likely that in some rooms you will need several boxes to store all your belongings, in this case, organize them by themes. Group objects of the same kind in the same box.

For example in the office, you can create boxes with different labels such as invoices, mail, or supplies. Or in the living room, you may need a bin for remote controls, another for table games, and more for magazines. I highly suggest you label the boxes so you can find quickly what you are looking for.

Use boxes to organize boxes … ok, right now you must think that I exaggerate a little. Let me explain, when you organize objects by themes, you will surely end up with boxes containing small objects, such as jewelry, craft supplies, or hair accessories. If you put them all together in the box it will remain quite messy and you won’t be able to quickly find what you want. In this case, you can use small boxes to sort small items. For example, for a jewelry box, you separate rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets each in a small different box.

Where to display boxes and baskets

The most common place to put baskets is shelving. Boxes are a great way to hide messy items and keep the room tidy. Use your storage boxes as a decor element, there are many ways you can DIY basket and boxes to match your decor, scroll down for awesome inspiration. Build your own storage is very rewarding, especially if you make them at the perfect size to fit the space.

Don’t hesitate to use boxes inside cupboards and closets, they really help to keep things tidy. Especially if you use them to sort items, like the DIY sweater boxes, mentioned below.

Placing a big basket on the floor or a box on a countertop can also be a nice idea. Use this option sparingly so as not to make the room look messy, but it is a good way to combine storage and decoration.

Personalized baskets

I give you an extra tip to keep the house organized with baskets: make a personalized basket for every member of your family, label each with the name and keep them on hand in the room you all share the most, which will likely be the living room or the kitchen.

Put the random items every family member left behind in everyone’s basket. When one basket is full ask the basket owner to empty it by putting every item back in its specific place. It’s a quick way to tidy up the mess and it also forces everyone to tidy up their belongings. What do you think? Would you give a try?

For each family member, use a basket with their names on it. Put belonging lying around in the corresponding basket. When it’s full, each person takes care of putting items back in place.

¿Cuál vas a probar?

For years I have stored craft supplies in plastic storage tubs and bins stacked floor to ceiling in my hobby room. I have now accomplished a total clean out of my hobby room, have organized supplies, donated a lot....and now have things neatly on shelves! But, now, all my floor space is taken up with these empty storage bins and tubs! I have made use of some in other rooms to organize things, but how can I "upcycle" these containers so they will look nice sitting out in other areas of my house? Please help!

Hello Dianne, I like to use bins and tubs to organize the closets. I sort the items, store them into the boxes and place them back into the closet. It preserves them from dust and the sheets and blankets stay fresh. If you still have some to use you can build some cube shelving at dimension and use the bin as drawers (you can google "plastic bin unit" to see what I mean). Or you can cover the inside of the box with some fabric or paper to make them look nicer, a little like what I did for in plastic drawers upgrade ( you can see my post https://www.ohohdeco.com/how-to-upgrade-plastic-drawers/). I hope this ideas helps you a little!
