Step 1: Gather Your Materials

To begin creating your beautiful vase from recyclable materials, the first step is to gather all the materials you will need. Take inventory of what you have at home, such as plastic bottles, glass jars, and toilet paper rolls. You can also collect materials from your local recycling center or ask friends and family to save materials for you. Having a variety of sizes and shapes will make for a more interesting and unique vase.

You can use differents kind of paint for this project like craft paint, home decor paint (these are great) or spray paint.

Once you have everything you need, you’re ready to move on to the next step and prepare your materials for crafting.

Step 2: Prepare Your Materials

Now that you have gathered all the materials you need, it’s time to prepare them for crafting. This step is important to ensure that your vase turns out as beautiful as possible. Start by cleaning plastic bottles and glass jars with soap and water. Remove any labels or stickers.

Next, I will show you to ways to create DIY vases, but feel free to unleash your creativity and try differents combinations.

Make sure to use scissors or a cutting tool appropriate for the material you are working with. Once all the materials are clean and prepared, you are ready to move on to the next step in creating your beautiful vase base.

Step 3: Create a Flower Vase with a plastic bottle

For the first DIY flower vase idea, take a plastic bottle and a few paper rolls.

Flatten the rolls and cut them in the center, then cut following the fold mark.
You will end up with 4 pieces out of one roll. Repeat a few times.
To give you an idea I cut 5 toilet paper rolls to make this first vase. But it can vary depending on the plastic bottle size.

Add glue on the edge of the toilet roll and fix it on the bottle. Align the rolls with the bottom of the bottle. Glue roll pieces to cover the base of the bottle.

To have a balanced design, you can measure the circumference of your bottle and put marks where you have to glue the edges of the rolls.
As exemple, I used a 1.5l bottle and glued 6 pieces of rolls to make the first row.

Glue a second row of rolls above the first, alternating curves.
Continue gluing rows of toilet paper rolls until you are happy with your design.

With a utility knife, trim the top of the bottle.

Paint your vase the color you like. I started with pink, then I changed my mind and went for a dark beige.

I like to use home decor paint as the paint is thick and cover very well the cardboard. You can use paint leftover or samples.

I applied two coats of paint and then a coat of this spray paint for a nice textured finished.

Step 4: Create a Flower Vase with a glass jar

For this second idea we will use a glass jar and toilet paper rolls.

Flatten the toilet paper rolls and cut them into slices. Then give each piece a “D” shape (one shorter and flat side, one longer and rounded side).
Made in several to cover the entire circumference of the jar.

Glue the cardboard pieces around the jar.

Cut and glue a few more cardboard piece to make a second row.

You can choose to work with different thickness of cardboard pieces. I cut large ones for the the lower row and thin ones for the top row.

Then paint your vase. This time I choose to spray paint it.

This step is where you can get creative and add your own personal touch to your upcycled craft. Choose a color that complements your room or experiment with bold, contrasting shades for a statement piece.

You can also use acrylic paint and a brush. I may be easier to paint the rolls in and out at the beginning, before cutting them.

Step 6: Enjoy Your New Vase

Stand back and admire your work of art. Your new vase is sure to be a conversation starter and a beautiful addition to any room.

Time to find the perfect spot to display it. Whether you choose to place it on a mantle, coffee table, or as centerpiece, your vase is bound to brighten up the space.

Take a moment to appreciate the fact that you’ve created something beautiful out of materials that would have otherwise ended up in the trash. Not only have you given new life to old items, but you’ve also created a unique piece that reflects your style and creativity.

Display your favorite flowers and enjoy your new vase.

In conclusion, creating a beautiful vase out of recyclable materials is not only environmentally conscious, but it also allows for a fun and creative outlet.

By utilizing plastic bottles, glass jars, and toilet paper rolls, you can turn what would be trash into treasure. Your new vase will not only be a statement piece in any room but a reminder of the beauty that can come from repurposing materials.

So, gather your materials, let your creativity flow, and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you’ve reduced waste while adding a personal touch to your home. As the saying goes, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”
