I spend too much time looking for my keys, hopefully, a nice DIY keychain will help to solve it.

This house-shaped DIY key-ring is made out of scrap fabrics. This easy sewing project is perfect for beginners and only takes a few minutes to make.

The house pattern comes in two sizes, a small and a large, and is available as a free download in my resource library.

I like to have a large key chain as it helps me find it quickly in my purse, but you can make a small house if you prefer a more compact key ring.

The ring is attached to the house chimney. I like the house design to be simple but feel free to customize it with embroidery floss or with fabric pens. You can draw or stitch doors, windows, flowers or names.

As these key chains are easy to make and personalized they make great gifts too. I like to mention it as I like homemade gifts and I’m always on the look for easy ideas!

Sounds like a fun and easy craft to make, are you ready to start?

Supplies to make a keychain

The main idea of this easy sewing craft is to use your scrap fabrics. So plunge into your scrap fabric drawer and pick the material you want to work with.

If you want to customize the house with embroidery floss or fabric pens, prefer plain fabric. If you like to keep the shape simple have fun sewing with a patterned fabric.

How do I make my own keychain?

First download and print the free house template. Choose if you like to make a large or small keychain and cut out the house shape.

Report the house template once on the felt and twice on he fabric.

Cut the chimney rectangle shape, report and cut the shape on the fabric.

Fold the rectangle long side on itself, you can make a seam or use a glue gun to hold it in place.

Place the 3 house shapes on top of each other, the felt must be between the fabric houses. The fabric must be right side out.

Fold the rectangle to make a loop and slide it between the fabric and the felt layer to create the house chimney.

The chimney loop is where you will pass the key ring to hold your keys.

Hold the layers in place with pins or sewing clips.

Choose a thread color that contrast with the fabric and make a seam at a few millimeters from the edges, following the house shape.

Pass a key ring around the chimney and add your keys!

And done you are ready to enjoy a new and colorful key chain.

As you can see this craft is so easy to make that I had fun making small and large key chains. I love how these little colored houses turns out.

I still have to customize them with name so I can remember what open the key I hanged on.

I like that this sewing project takes only a few minutes to make and that it cost almost nothing.

As I use scrap fabrics and felt, the only thing I had to buy where the key rings. Next time I would likely get theses ones, they seams more practicals.
